The story about “Shin Musume”

 I was asked by my friend on Facebook that what is the story about “Shin Musume”‘s bell, a monk, and a snake. So I tried to write.

Facebook上の友人から、「新娘道成寺」の鐘や僧侶、大蛇の物語について訊ねられたので、書いてみることにしました。

[A prequel story 前日譚] 
In the early 10th century, a young monk came to Wakayama. His name was “Anchin”, and he was very handsome.
10世紀の初め、若い僧侶が和歌山にやってきた。彼の名は「安珍」で、とても美形であった。

When he rented an inn on the way to Kumano, the young daughter fell in love with him at first sight. Her name was “Kiyohime”. She proposed, but Anchin lied "I’ll leave, and return from Kumano" to refuse.
彼が熊野への道中に宿を取った時、若い娘がひと目見るなり彼に惚れ込んでしまった。彼女の名は「清姫」で、結婚を申し込んだが、安珍から「熊野へ出発する。帰り道に寄るから」と嘘をつかれ、断られてしまった。

But he didn’t come back, so Kiyohime got angry. She chased Anchin and caught up, but he lied again “You have mistaken me for someone else “. She was very angry, transformed into a snake and chased him again.
しかし、彼は帰っては来なかったため、清姫は怒ってしまった。彼女は安珍を追いかけて捉えたが、安珍は「人違いではありませんか」とまたもや嘘をついた。清姫は怒りに震え、蛇に化身し、再び彼を追いかけたのだ。

He crossed the river, and escaped to “Dojoji” temple. He hid in the bell, but the snake found him, and burned him to death with a bell. That snake also entered the river and committed suicide.
彼は川を渡り、道成寺に逃げ込んだ。鐘の中に隠れたが、蛇に見つかってしまった。そして鐘ごと焼き殺されてしまったのだ。蛇もまた川に身を投げてしまった。

[Noh’s “Dojoji” story 能「道成寺」の話]
After that, a dancing woman came to Dojoji. Her name was “Hanako”. At that time, because of that incident, the temple was forbidden to women. But she went into the temple and danced. In fact, she was Kiyohime's ghost. Finally, she went under the bell, and it fell down on her, then she turned into a snake. The snake was very angry and struggled, but the monks prayed and the snake fled to the river.
後に、ある白拍子が道成寺にやってきた。名前を「花子」といった。その時、事件の影響により、寺は女人禁制となっていたのだが、彼女は境内に入り、舞を舞った。実は、彼女は清姫の怨霊だったのだ。最終的に彼女は鐘の下に行き、それは彼女に落下して、白拍子は蛇に化身した。蛇は大いに怒って暴れたが、僧侶たちが祈祷し、蛇は川へと消えていった。

[About Jiuta’s “Shin-Musume-Dojoji”]

This story seems to be a famous for Japanese people in the Edo period. So lots of “Dojoji-mono”, which are works inspired by these stories, had made.
この話は江戸時代の日本人にとって有名な物語だったようで、たくさんの「道成寺もの」つまりこれらの話に影響された作品群が創作された。

“Shin-Musume” is one of them.
In fact, the lyrics don’t include these stories, almost. There are lots of words, expressing jealousy and complex feelings about women for men. In Edo period, the Japanese probably recalled “Dojoji” story, when they thought about women’s love.
「新娘道成寺」もその一つだ。実のところ、歌詞にはこれらの物語が殆ど含まれていない。歌詞には、女性の男性に対する嫉妬心や複雑な心境が綴られている。江戸時代、日本人は女性の恋心について思いを馳せる時、「道成寺」の話を想起したのだろう。
